Protect our Lakes and Streams

As your candidate for Mayor, I am committed to standing with the community to address the ongoing and increasingly urgent issue of declining Lake Sawyer water levels. This is not just a matter of inconvenience—it's a threat to the health of our local ecosystem, property values, recreational opportunities, and overall quality of life.

Many community members have properly raised concerns about the possible impact of groundwater pumping near Lake Sawyer on water levels.

Groundwater and surface water are connected, so pumping groundwater can diminish the amount of water flowing into and within lakes and streams. This can lead to harmful impacts:

  • Reduced Habitat: Even if they don't dry completely, lower water levels reduce the available living space for fish and other aquatic life, concentrating them into smaller areas and making them more susceptible to predation.

  • Changes in Species Composition: Native specialist species, adapted to specific flow conditions, may be replaced by generalist species or even invasive species that are more tolerant of the altered environment, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

  • Altered Water Quality: Reduced flows can lead to warmer water temperatures and lower dissolved oxygen levels, stressing aquatic species and potentially causing fish kills.

  • Disrupted Life Cycles: Some species depend on specific flow patterns or water levels for spawning or migration, and these processes can be disrupted by changes in water availability.
